THIMBLES ON WHEELS
                          Joint Thimble Meeting
                               April 3 & 4, 2009

The CALIFORNIA THIMBLE GROUPS -- consisting of Southern California
Thimble Collectors (SCTC), Bay Area Thimble Society (BATS), Thimble
Collectors of San Diego (TCSD) -- along with
(TOW) held a
Joint Thimble Meeting in Buellton, California on April 3-4,

There  were  a  total  of  44 attendees,  including  spouses:      26--TOW;
23--SCTC;   14--BATS; and  7--TCSD.  (That totals more than 44, but many
attendees are members of multiple clubs.)

Buellton is only 2 miles from
Solvang, an authentic  Danish-American Village
with European architecture, founded in 1911 by Danish immigrants.  Both
cities are located in California's historical Santa Ynez Valley.

As everyone arrived on Friday, they checked into our hotel, the
Western Pea Soup Andersen's Inn which is next door to the world-famous
Pea Soup Andersen
's Restaurant (we had our photo taken there).

Kit and Mary, being from out-of-state, flew into Santa Barbara, rented a car,
and drove up Highway 101 along the coastline to Buellton.  What a beautiful
and scenic drive!  After check-in, some of us explored the Buellton/Solvang
area, including a visit to a
miniature horse ranch, and saw several wineries
and even an Ostrich ranch.  We visited some of the wonderful shops in
downtown Solvang and couldn't pass up a bite at one of the many Danish
bakeries there.

At 4pm everyone gathered at the
Gazebo/Breakfast Room in the center
courtyard of the Inn for a "Meet & Greet" with snacks and munchies.  The
Gazebo is surrounded by a
Putting Green on one side and swimming pool
on the other.  It was good to see old friends again, and later that evening the
visitation naturally spilled over into the rooms and the fun continued.

On Saturday morning the first Event of the day was the
Sales Mall held in the
Valley and Gold Rooms at Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant.  The rooms
were filled with 12 seller's
tables (9 vendors),  one Silent Auction table (items
donated by DeLoris Anderson and Donna Rothman) and a table of free
goodies donated by various members, including many items from the
col-lection of the late Alice Donley.  Oh my, what a glorious thing it is to shop
and buy thimbles, as you well know.

At 12, everyone moved into the restaurant for lunch on their own, and came
back at 1:30 for the programs.
Mary Craft was the first speaker, with her
program on "Donkey Thimbles and Sewing Tools."  Next was
Kit Froebel
giving her presentation on "Contemporary Thimble Makers."  Unfortunately,
Kit had lost her voice the night before and was unable to talk, so Sandy
Plourde filled in and read her transcript.
 (Thanks, Sandy!)

Dinner Saturday evening was at the River Grill at the Alisal Guest Ranch and
Resort in Solvang, which is actually located inside the Alisal Golf Course.
The food was wonderful and the service superb.  Table favors donated by
members were at each place -- always fun.  We had drawings for some
really great door prizes.  A good time was had by all, and I think we all ate
too much.

The California Groups did a spectacular job of planning this Joint Thimble
Meeting and TOW was pleased to be invited to join them.
everyone in the California groups who contributed to this event, with extra
special thanks to Sandi Wood, Donna Rothman, DeLoris Anderson and
Sandy Plourde.
